SDCC Report: Shannara TV series could be the next Game of Thrones

Shannara TV series could be the next Game of Thrones
By David Glenn

The long wait is over. At Comic Con in San Diego the first trailer for the TV show of The Shannara Chronicles has been shown, and it really has potential. Following the plot of the second book written, The Elfstones of Shannara, the story follows the adventures of Wil Ohmsford, a descendent of Jerle Shannara, who is informed by the druid Allanon that the Ellcrys, a magical tree in the kingdom of the elves, is dying and one of the Chosen must be taken to strengthen it before the tree dies. What happens if they fail? Nothing bad, except for a horde of incredibly angry demons and monsters will come through and destroy the entire world.

Fans of the books all over have waited for the books to be adapted. After watching the trailer I say this show has the potential to be the next Game of Thrones. The world, though not officially named, takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, where people have regressed to a medieval style of living. Some of humanity have become the races of trolls, gnomes, and dwarves. There is magic and danger around every corner, and if you’re not careful you could become victim to an entity of dark magic.

The trailer is incredible as it catches the feeling of magic and shows glimpses of how the world we know no longer exists. Buildings and vehicles we recognized have fallen over and eroded until they practically no longer exist. The characters look as if they walked out of the pages of the books, and the monsters that are seen are certain to give one nightmares. Author Terry Brooks has said that “seeing it has made it very real for me.” With lots of books to draw ideas for seasons from we could be watching Shannara for a very long time. Watch the trailer below and get excited for the next big fantasy TV series.
