Disney announced earlier this week that filming for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales has started filming in Australia.
Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar ([Javier] Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea… including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.
Here’s the question that even diehard PotC fans might be asking: is this movie even necessary at this point?
True, the films may have gotten less-than-stellar reviews as the franchise went on (compare the first film’s 79% “fresh” score with On Stranger Tides‘s 33%), but Depp seems to still be having fun with it, along with Rush and other alums from the previous movies. While the plot is pretty much bits of everything from PotC 1-4, it’s a popcorn movie. Go in with no preconceptions (or standards) and you just might have a good time. Go in expecting a masterpiece of cinema and you’ll have paid $10+ to make yourself sad/mad.
Dead Men Tell No Tales will be released July 7, 2017.
