Another New Star Wars Movie…From Pixar?!

pixarswBoy, the Star Wars stuff won’t stop coming, will it? It’s like there’s something major going on with this franchise or something…

This latest bit of news was broken by the folks at Latino Review:

At this point, no idea what the size or shape of this film will be and given the long-view storytelling production model that is part of the Pixar brand, this could be a long way off. We can expect it to take place in the middle of a Venn Diagram between Star Wars and A Pixar Movie, and what that means to you depends on your definition of both.

While it shouldn’t surprise anyone given how much money Disney knows it will make from anything Star Wars related, I’m very much on the fence about this. Yes, the franchise is family-friendly. Yes, you can only make a story so dark or “mature” before getting out of touch with the spirit of what makes Star Wars “Star Wars”.

That said, I’ve not been keen on Pixar’s projects in the last couple of years (most notably the Cars and Planes films). If I want a more juvenile version of my current obsession, I’ll be happy as pie with the LEGO Star Wars specials (I laughed harder than a grown woman should during every single one).

What do you guys think? Yea or nay?

  1. Just so we’re clear. Pixar did not make Planes. Disneytoon Studios did. They’re the studio behind the Disney Fairy movies, and Planes and the upcoming Planes: Fire & Rescue (which should have arguably been the first Planes film, as it has a much more compelling story).

Disney has 3 separate feature length animation studios: Disney Animation, Pixar, Disneytoon.

Other than that, this is a very interesting development. Pixar’s been firing on all cylinders lately, with Brave, Monster’s University and their upcoming film slate, Inside Out (which should be a mega-hit, from what I’ve seen), The Good Dinosaur and Finding Dory.

It’s my hope that Pixar will create something worthy of the Star Wars brand. I’ve never been more excited about the future of Star Wars than I have since it fell into the studio that I believe is the right place for it.

I agree Paul. I’m a somewhat biased star wars geek, having loved it all since a lil kid in 77, but i think disney is a great fit. a lot of people bemoan it like oh, mickey mouse is gonna be a jedi lol, or something; but disney has done a lot of movies that cover a whole range of tones. lucasfilm’s resources combined with disney, and a general strong intent by everyone involved to return star wars to the “classic” feel of it… i think its gonna be fine..i think it may even be great….im just excited to have so much star wars looming on the horizon

  2. Thanks Paul, I was about to make the correction about Planes myself as it is a fairly confusing task to untangle the various relationships if one hasn’t followed the development from the beginning.
And while I am a big Cars fan, I utterly despise Cars 2. The one movie Pixar should never have made.

  3. Oh! And maybe this is how we can get Brad Bird to direct a Star Wars film!
